BAE Systems has welcomed a one year, $12 million contract extension that will see the company support the Royal Australian Navy’s Hydrographic fleet until 2020. Around 60 people based in Cairns are directly involved with the In Service Support Contract, valued at $436 million. The Department of Defence has awarded Austria’s Schiebel Group a contract to supply its Camcopter S-100 to meet the Royal Australian Navy’s interim vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial system (UAS) requirement. Featuring a carbon fibre and titanium fuselage, the S-100 has a maximum takeoff weight of 200kg and can carry a 34kg payload of electro-optics and infrared sensors for up to 10 hours. The Department of Defence (DoD) has announced a $232 million contract extension to expand GE’s support of jet engines for the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) fighter fleet until 2025. Under the contract, GE will provide engineering, supply and maintenance support for the 84 engines of Australia’s F/A-18F Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler aircraft fleets. The Growler fleet is scheduled to enter service in 2017.
