Department of Defence extends GE engine contract for Super Hornet & Growler

The Department of Defence (DoD) has announced a $232 million contract extension to expand GE’s support of jet engines for the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) fighter fleet until 2025. Under the contract, GE will provide engineering, supply and maintenance support for the 84 engines of Australia’s F/A-18F Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler aircraft fleets. The Growler fleet is scheduled to enter service in 2017. Australian industry stands to benefit from the US Department of Defense’s assignment of the first component repair responsibilities outside the continental US for the F-35 Lightning II. From 2021 to 2025, three of the first 65 components have been assigned to Australia to undertake repairs on a global basis for all F-35s around the world, with the UK assigned 48 components and the Netherlands assigned 14. The DCNS design for the Shortfin Barracuda has been selected for the Sea 1000 Future Submarine Program. French firm DCNS have been awarded the contract to provide Australia with 12 submarines. While the design is French, the build will be all-Australian. The boats will contribute to Australia’s regional naval capability for several decades to come.
